If you’ve used capsule coffee machines, including Nespresso, you’re likely to love the convenience of making delicious coffees. The downsides are they can be wasteful and not great for the environment, plus capsules are more expensive than whole beans. But what if there was a machine that could make different kinds of coffee to the same standard but without the pods?

The Spinn coffee machine promises to do that. But does it deliver, and what else does it offer that makes it so different from almost any other machine?

Let’s take a closer look at this innovative coffee maker and find out more.

Summary

Spinn Coffee Maker

What Sets Spinn Coffee Maker Apart From Others?

The Spinn coffee maker uses centrifugal force to produce espresso, drip coffee, and cold brew without pods. If you are environmentally conscious and have avoided capsule machines, the Spinn machine solves the problem.

Let’s face it – very few people have the luxury of time first thing on a workday. If that applies to you, the Spinn machine can make coffee in the time it takes to reach the kitchen from the bedroom via Spinn app connectivity, which means you can command it to make whatever coffee you want before you even climb out of bed.

Perhaps your favorite element of brewing is sampling specialty coffees. But how do you choose the best and get the most out of the coffee beans? The app lets you order beans from roasters, scan the bag, and program the machine to make recipes precisely as designed by your local roasters. This brewing process guarantees optimal coffee extraction.

Design And Build Quality

The cylindrical design is robust with a minimalist aesthetic. For those who would rather not use the app, there are buttons arranged vertically (for express, lungo, coffee, and personalized coffee serving) on the front.

The bean hopper holds 18oz of whole coffee beans, while the removable water tank at the back is 40oz – large enough for several cups of coffee. There is also a generous 6″ clearance between the spout and the removable drip tray, leaving enough room to fit a carafe or travel mug.

The Spinn coffee maker also has a used coffee grounds container to ensure zero waste as spent grounds can be used in the garden – perfect for environmentally aware coffee lovers.

There is also a built-in, conical burr grinder, which will offer consistent freshly ground coffee at the correct size for the best quality coffee.

Brew Performance

The Spinn coffee machine can make many drinks, from filter coffee style drinks to espresso. For example, if you love filter coffee, it’s no issue for the Spinn, which uses centrifugal brewing technology at 1500RPM for a drip-style coffee drink.

But what if you love high-quality coffee beans brewed using carefully tailored recipes by professional roasters? Scanning the coffee bag allows you to upload the recipe to the machine, which will brew it perfectly dialed in, allowing you to enjoy coffee-shop quality drinks at home.

It’s also an espresso maker. However, rather than use a pump to force water through the coffee grounds, the patented centrifugal force spinner extracts the coffee for an espresso-type drink with crema. It does this by injecting water into the grounds as it spins in a drum at 4,500RPM before pushing the extracted coffee into the cup.

Because the espresso is not made using nine bars of pressure, but with centrifugal force, it is technically not an authentic espresso. However, it looks and tastes like a rich espresso made by a typical coffee maker. You’ll have good coffee each time.

One area of concern is the slightly larger bubbles on the crema produced by the machine. In this regard, it is similar to the results of the Nespresso VertuoLine. However, a big advantage is the whole bean coffee it uses rather than pods, which are both fresher and cheaper.

What if you’re craving a cold brew on a hot day? If you didn’t already have some in the fridge, you’d need to prepare it and wait until the next day to enjoy it. Not with the Spinn, which can make it in just 60 seconds. How? Well, rather than wait for the coffee to extract slowly at room temperature, the machine uses centrifugal force to mix coffee with water.

User Friendliness

Using the machine could barely be easier. While, like most machines, there are buttons to give you coffee, the app connectivity sets it apart.

Scrolling through the app’s clean interface, you can choose the precise coffee you want and have the Spinn machine make it for you. You can set it the night before to make a delightful drink the following morning. You can also connect the machine to an Amazon Echo device to make your coffee using your voice.

Programmability

While programmability is straightforward using the app, the number of drinks the machine can make is also impressive. The app has an option for espresso, lungo, doppio, Americano, regular coffee, and more preset drink options.

You can also customize your beverage on the app, from the coffee amount to the strength, as well as the size of the drink. The spectrum for customization is wide, leaving plenty of scopes to experiment with. You can then save your customized drink in the app and name it.

If you don’t want to use the app or don’t have access to it for a time, you can save up to four customized drinks on the machine.

Smart Features With App Support

The machine’s app is intuitive and offers far more than simply making coffee via its interface. You can optimize your drink parameters, so if you love experimenting with coffee, it offers plenty of scope before saving your favorite recipes.

The app will also alert you to issues, including your coffee running low and offering maintenance tips, taking the guesswork out of refilling your machine, or when to service it. You can also set it to order more beans when it senses you’re running low, automating the purchasing process – perfect for those with time constraints.

As we mentioned earlier, you can choose from curated coffee roasters across the US to deliver their coffee to your door. Scan the bag, and the machine will use the perfect brew temperature, grind size, and coffee style as intended by the roaster. This is the only coffee maker that brew fresh coffee as the roaster intended.

The app also provides access to the dedicated Spinn coffee community allowing roasters and users to share their favorite recipes.

Drawbacks

One of the biggest issues is it doesn’t come with a milk frother. However, you can purchase one separately to create milk-based coffee drinks. Alternatively, you can opt for a more expensive Prop Plus or Pro bundle, each with a milk frother. The frother is high-quality and affordable if you choose to go with the basic package.

Another small drawback is that because of the centrifugal force rather than pump pressure, espresso cannot technically be termed as authentic, while the crema is slightly bubbly. However, this will only be an issue for espresso lovers.

Value For Money

The Spinn is one of the most advanced smart coffee machines on the market, and it’s the only one that works with coffee roasters directly and brews each coffee in a specific way. Meanwhile, brewing coffee is easy with the user-friendly app, so if you want specialty coffee quality at home, it will soon save money over going to a shop.

The Spinn machine is high-end but is in the same price category as mid-range espresso machines that require barista skills to make great coffee. Meanwhile, the coffee quality is much better than that of single-serve coffee makers and drip coffee makers.

If you love coffee and tech, this is well worth the money.

Differences Between Spinn Original, Pro And Pro Plus

There are three options when buying the Spinn coffee machine – Original, Pro, and Pro Plus.

The brewing methods and the app supports are identical for all three Spinn coffee makers. However, the last two support water supply lines, which is perfect if you never want to worry about when your water level in the reservoir is getting low.

The Pro Plus bundle comes with the milk frother, and Pro Bundle has all the accessories, including the carafe, milk frother, and a travel mug. Meanwhile, all versions offer $15 coffee credits so that you can try the beans.

Who Is It Suitable For?

The Spinn coffee maker is fantastic whether you are a coffee lover, tech enthusiast, environmentally conscious, or time constrained. In all three areas, the machine is far better than many alternatives.

The app is intuitive, clean, and easy to navigate. Meanwhile, the ability to connect the machine for voice control could be the shape of things to come for modern domestic brewing. Likewise, the ability to order beans via the app – either automatically or manually – and scan beans from specialty roasters to offer the perfect recipes is a game changer.

Because the machine is so easy to use, and you can control it via the app, it is excellent for those without the time to make coffee from scratch. Finally, the fact it doesn’t use pods makes it far more environmentally friendly than capsule machines.

Final Thoughts

In a crowded market, the Spinn coffee maker stands out for its brewing innovation and intuitive app. Not only that, but the range of coffee it produces is impressive. Meanwhile, the quality is easily on par with many other espresso machines.

A few small drawbacks include requiring a separate milk frother for milk-based espresso drinks. Still, these are far outweighed by an excellent addition to the market that may be a forerunner for how much domestic brewing will look in the future.
